At Golborne, we believe that meal times and snacks are very important parts of the day. Eating represents a social time for children and adults and helps children to learn about healthy eating habits, so we organise our meals as social occasions. Both children and staff actively participate – children sit together on small tables and are encouraged to use the opportunity to talk about what they are eating and we help our children develop independence by making choices, serving food and drink and feeding themselves.
Our food is freshly produced on a daily basis by our dedicated catering team, most freshly prepared in our own kitchens. Our food is provided by A.I.P Catering, who, in consultation with our Head and Managers, design a menu cycle for us, tailoring the menu to our nursery’s population and children’s individual dietary needs. We use the very best organic fruit, vegetables and dairy produce, together with organic bread, free range chicken meat and free range eggs. Fish is MSC compliant from sustainable sources and meat is Red Tractor Farm assured. The menus are planned in partnership and in line with the nutritional guidelines, thus ensuring the food provides a balanced meal to all our children. We provide a vegetarian alternative for each meal, and also provide halal meat twice a week.
The menu cycle is reviewed every term to coincide with the seasons, seasonal produce, and our children’s tastes. We include foods from the diet of the children’s cultural backgrounds, and we think it is important to provide children with familiar foods, but also to introduce them to new ones. We love celebrating a variety of festivities throughout the year, including Christmas, Eid and Chinese New Year, and we try to have food matching the festivities – our fortune cookies are always a big hit!
